Swift Plans For Canberra Composite Decking - A Logical Overview

Types Of Deck Washes And Cleaners

Step 2: Spray With Soapy Water & Scrub

Was wondering if a Kilz coat would cover the spots and then it could be painted or stained. I installed a trex deck last year and had the black spots appear within a couple of months. So I went out and bought the corte clean that trex recommends but decided to do a precleaning with some Simple Green Heavy Duty I had laying around. Even with a very diluted mixture the deck came out like new with light scrubing. I will be returning the expensive Corte Clean because I dont believe that it could get much cleaner. Just an FYI though, my deck is less than a year old so Im not sure how well this stuff will work on a deck that has gone longer without cleaning. Just thought Id share my experience with all the other frustrated owners of trex out there.

Premixed Vs Concentrated Deck Cleaners

Will bleach clean a deck?

Bleach literally bleaches the wood, resulting in a lightening of wood's natural coloration. Cleaning with bleach does kill mold and mildew that may be on the deck, but it does not eliminate the spores from which mold and mildew grow.

If the ingredients include Sodium Hypochlorite, it contains Bleach. Make sure you choose a non-toxic, sodium percarbonate based cleaner. Use a broom to remove snow from your composite decking. Just like remembering your gaps and proper cleaners, the same advice applies here.

Can I Seal Composite Decking?

Sure, various products--tsp/bleach/commercial cleaners--will beat the mold back, but it returns with a vengeance. There are other synthetic products on the market that are less susceptible to discoloration and mold--check them out.

  • Be very careful so that you use only ammonia free dish soap.
  • Liquid dish soap (ammonia-free) is safe for use on cleaning your natural wood deck when mixed with a little warm water.
  • Otherwise, if ammonia is mixed with bleach, it can create toxic fumes.
  • Simply mix 1 gallon of water, 2 tablespoons of ammonia-free dish soap (such as Murphy’s), 1 pint of rubbing alcohol, and 1 quart of oxygen bleach.
  • Once you’ve blended your mixture, swab it on your deck and rinse it clean with water.

Dry sweep occasionally with a bristled broom to keep debris off the deck surface and to keep the gaps between the deck boards clear. Wash with warm water and a non-bleach dish soap using a sponge as needed. For any stains it is always best to remove immediately. Looking for a more natural way to restore and clean your composite deck? To keep up the beauty and functionality that you want from your deck, a little care and cleaning can go a long way. Now that your deck is clean as new, take a look around you.

Use a deck brightener than contains oxalic acid on tannin stains. Water spots, also known as tannin stains, are normal occurrences on wood. Over time, you will likely start to notice some on your deck. Make sure the surface is completely dry and then apply a deck brightener product that contains oxalic acid on the surface of your deck.

Removing Stains

I had it power washed last year for $200 and it didn't even touch the spots. We have a large deck off our kitchen/family room and a smaller one off our study upstairs. I'd love to get rid of them and build new ones but we spent almost $10,000 for them. The house was originally built with a Redwood deck that was rotting through the posts so it was dangerous. I also got the recommendation to clean it with Olympic or the other mail-order cleaner. Not too anxious to use either produce with the reports posted here.

This isn’t more effective than scrubbing by hand, but it’s much faster. If you have a large deck, you may prefer this approach. Use a pressure washer with no greater than 3100 psi and make sure it has a fan attachment and soap dispenser.

Does vinegar kill mold?

White vinegar is a mildly acidic product that cleans, deodorizes, and disinfects. It can also kill 82% of mold species, including black mold, on porous and non-porous surfaces. You can use it safely on most surfaces, and its offensive odor goes away quickly. Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle.

To remove tannin stains from debris, such as leaves, apply a commercial deck brightener once the Trex decking is dry. Make sure to follow the manufacturer instructions, and check to see if the product contains bleach or acid. If it does, it will lighten the color of your Trex decking, so apply some on an inconspicuous area first to see if you like the look. If the deck is made from a composite material, use a composite deck cleaner.

How do I naturally clean my deck?

For a more natural but less effective deck cleaning solution, mix one cup of white vinegar with one gallon of warm water. This all-natural mixture is perfect for delicate teak wood decks where youwant to avoid any damage to nearby ground cover plants or perennials.
